Y11 – A Christmas Carol: some quotations

Here are some quotations from A Christmas Carol.

Stave 1

  • He was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone
  • External heat and cold had little influence
  • (description of Fred) his face was ruddy and handsome
  • every idiot who goes about with Merry Christmas should be boiled
  • are there no prisons … are there no workhouses
  • if they would rather die … they had better do it and decrease the surplus population

Stave 2

  • It was a strange figure – like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man

Stave 3

  • The sky was gloomy … and yet there was an air of cheerfulness

  • It may be in the sight of heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man’s child
  • The mention of his name cast a dark shadow on the party (Cratchits)
  • They were not a handsome family, they were not well dressed … but they were happy
  • Fred – ‘his wealth is of no use to him .. I couldn’t be angry with him if I tried’
  • Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish (ignorance and want)
  • They are man’s … beware them both

Stave 4

  • It was shrouded in a deep black garment
  • It’s likely to be a very cheap funeral
  • Every person has a right to take care of themselves. He always did.
  • He frightened every one away from him when he was alive, to profit us when he was dead
  • Plundered and bereft, unwatched, unwept, uncared for, was the body of this man
  • Spirit, this is a fearful place
  • It was a happier house for this man’s death
  • A worthy place
  • I am not the man I was
  • I will honour Christmas in my heart

Stave 5

  • I will live in the Past, the Present and the Future
  • I’ll raise your salary
  • Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh
